Five female-lead TV shows to binge over summer.
The summer holidays are possibly the best time of year. No school, no commitments and just time to relax.
One of the best ways to unwind and do nothing at all is to binge some quality Netflix shows. But finding a new show worthy of binging can be difficult without some recommendations.
Recently there have been some incredible shows on Netflix all with something in common - killer female casts.
So, If you like funny shows with a little bit (a lot) of drama, amazing fashion moments and a whole lot of laughs - do we have some recommendations for you.
Here are Billie’s top five female-lead Netflix shows to binge over summer:
Never Have I Ever
Seasons: 2
The Netflix blurb: After a traumatic year, an Indian-American teen just wants to spruce up her social status — but friends, family and feelings won’t make it easy on her.
This show is a gem from start to finish and in true binge style I finished watching all 20 eps in less than a week.
The show follows the hilarious Devi, (played by the incredible Maitreyi Ramakrishnan) navigating her family, friends, school life and most importantly her love life.
Created by comedy powerhouse Mindy Kaling, Never Have I Ever is a hilarious, wholesome and heartwarming tale all wrapped up into 20 episodes (with a new season coming soon!)
I loved this because although I have never been an American teenager in the 2020’s, I still felt like I could relate to Devi and her friends. Devi also has some boss-ass female influences in her life and I love that.
P.S. Keep some tissues handy for Season One - Episode 10 😭
The Bold Type
Seasons: 5
The Netflix blurb: At a women's magazine in New York, three millennials juggle their careers, romance, friendships and big-city life while finding their own voices.
If you have seen the Devil Wears Prada and thought, yes, I want to live my best fashion life and move to New York to work at a magazine - watch the Bold Type IMMEDIATELY.
The Bold Type follows Jane, Sutton and Kat, who all work at Scarlett magazine (the fictional equivalent of Cosmopolitan).
I like to think the show is like a millennial Sex and the City, with the girls navigating their amazing work lives with their crazy and chaotic personal/love lives.
My favourite part of The Bold Type is how strong the female characters are and how they are always there to build each other up. Jane, Sutton and Kat are #friendshipgoals and I love that they always have each other’s back.
Emily In Paris
Seasons: 2
The Netflix Blurb: After landing her dream job in Paris, Chicago marketing exec Emily Cooper embraces her adventurous new life while juggling work, friends and romance.
More than anything, Emily in Paris is the ultimate guilty pleasure watch.
France, the fashion, the faux-pas’; the friendships and of course Gabriel 😍
There’s been a bit of criticism of this show's perception (or lack thereof) of reality but honestly who cares!
Do I wish I was the fourth member of the Emily/Mindy/Cami girl band - obviously! But what’s the point of TV if not to escape.
Let me watch Emily live her best life in Paris.
Jane The Virgin
Seasons: 5
The Netflix blurb: After vowing to remain chaste until marriage, Jane Villanueva learns she's pregnant due to a medical slip-up and has to rethink her future.
This show is just wholesome to its core. Told in the style of a telenovela (a Latin American soap opera), it follows Jane who (not really a spoiler) falls pregnant despite being a virgin.
It’s full of crazy twists and turns, including a very solid love triangle, however Jane always comes back to her support system in the form of her mum, Xo and Abuela (grandma), Alba) - two kickass ladies.
This would actually be a pretty cute watch if you were looking for something to watch with your own mum.
Derry Girls
Seasons: 2
The Netflix blurb: Amidst the political conflict of Northern Ireland in the 1990s, five high school students square off with the universal challenges of being a teenager.
If you are looking for something a little out of the box compared to the rest of this list, try Derry Girls. Following four teenage girls (plus one guy) in the middle of conflict in Northern Ireland, Derry Girls is a visit back to the era that was the 1990’s.
This show is clever and honest with some amazing crack-up moments but the stars are of course, Erin, Orla, Claire and Michelle.
Derry Girls obviously has a bit of a historical element to it but that doesn’t make it any less great. It just goes to show that teenage life doesn’t just stop in the middle of bigger societal problems.
Another safe one to watch with the rents.
