Make a New Year’s Resolution worth keeping.
For many people the new year is also a new beginning. A chance to start over, do things differently or pick up on things that were neglected or forgotten the year before.
Of course a lot of people mark this by making a New Year’s Resolution.
I’ve made my fair share of them over the years, many exercise and health related - almost none of those exercise and health related resolutions have been achieved.
So instead of making empty promises to yourself, like me, here is my number one tip to make a resolution worth keeping: make it fun!
In 2019, I made my best resolution yet. It was something I not only managed to do, but also enjoyed along the way. My new year’s resolution was to go to more concerts.
I’ve always been a huge music fan and love going to live concerts (pre-COVID 🥲). The problem was that a concert would be announced but I never committed to buying the tickets and then the time would come to go and I’d get major FOMO from all those who actually committed.
That year instead of another broken promise, I went to nine concerts in 12 months including Florence and the Machine, Six60, Kacey Musgraves, Rufus Du Sol and a 60’s cover band called the Up-Doo’s. It was the most random and eclectic mix of concerts and I had the best time at every single one of them!
Not only did I love every single concert I went to that year, I made a tonne of incredible memories with the people I went with. I was also proud of myself for sticking to a resolution for once and I think it was all the easier because it was something enjoyable.
Studying more, getting fitter or less screen time, while all valid goals, aren't exactly fun to try to achieve.
Often these resolutions are ditched before you even make it to March and you end up feeling bad about yourself for not sticking to your goal. And the thing is, we all have far too much to feel bad about with the current state of the world.
So this new year, make a resolution to have more fun.
Organise a monthly friend-date where you all go and do something crazy fun together, swim in the ocean more, listen to a new podcast every week, visit places you’ve always wanted to go or give a compliment to someone everyday.
It can be as big or small as you want it to be but find something that you know already brings you joy or happiness and promise yourself you’ll DO MORE OF IT!
While I’m yet to make my own New Year’s Resolution, I’ll be sure to take my own advice because there is no such thing as too much happiness.
